President of Wayne Chamber Stan Shelton – Grand Knight Paul Sposite – Wayne Chamber Intern Michael Bastine

On March 29, 1882, the Knights of Columbus was born as a mutual aid society for Catholic men. It was the vision of Father Michael J. McGivney, a young priest at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, who wanted to help his parishioners and their families in times of need. He gathered a group of men who shared his ideals of charity, unity, and fraternity, and together they formed the first council of the Order. Today, the Knights of Columbus is one of the largest and most active Catholic organizations in the world, with over 2 million members in more than 15,000 councils.

The Knights is an organization that provides financial support to its members and their families in times of need. It also fosters a sense of community and learning among its members and their families through various activities and programs that aim to enhance their education, charity, religion, social welfare, war relief and public relief efforts.

How did a visionary priest named Father Michael J. McGivney start the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization? The Order’s history reveals his remarkable legacy of helping families achieve financial security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs. The Order also serves communities around the globe with its charitable and volunteer efforts.

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to 15,900 councils and 1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea.

We are involved in many kinds of charitable work at the local, national, and international levels. We partner with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity, as well as our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids initiatives and other local causes. Working together with other Knights and their families gives us many opportunities to make a difference. In 2017, we reached a new record of charitable giving for the 19th year in a row. We donated more than $185 million, up from $177 million in 2016. We also gave more than 75 million hours of service in 2017, our highest level ever.
